Western Larch

Cones

Pacific (Western) Larch cones start as small, erect, brightly colored (pink, purple, red) female cones in spring, developing into 1-2 inch ovoid-cylindrical structures with reddish-brown, papery scales and tiny whiskers (bracts) sticking out. They mature to brown, open to release seeds, and often stay on the tree for years, turning dull gray-black.

Western Larch

Bark

The bark of a Pacific Larch (Western Larch) starts thin and smooth, but with age, it becomes thick, deeply furrowed, and scaly, with a distinctive reddish-brown to cinnamon-brown color, often peeling in flat, elongated scales, giving it a robust, textured look similar to Ponderosa Pine but generally browner and more deeply fissured.
