Provenance

Silver fir

Needles

Silver fir needles are typically flattened, about an inch long, dark green on top with two distinct silvery-white bands underneath, and often have a notched tip, pointing upward and forward on the twig, resembling a brush or fur on a dog's back, leaving smooth, round scars when they fall.

Silver fir

Cones

Silver fir cones are distinctive: they stand erect (upright) on the branches, are cylindrical, typically dark purple or bronze-green before maturity, and fall apart (disintegrate) on the tree to release seeds, leaving only a central spike on the branch. They range from 3.5 to 7 inches long, depending on the species, and have scales that hide short, protruding bracts (modified leaves).

Silver fir

Bark

Silver fir bark starts smooth, gray, and blistered with resin when young, transitioning with age to a scaly, often reddish-gray or chalky-white texture with plates and shallow furrows, differing by species but generally smooth/blistered to scaly/plated.
