Provenance

Shore Pine

Needles

Shore pine needles are short, stiff, dark green to yellow-green, and grow in bundles (fascicles) of two, often appearing twisted or rotated, giving the tree a rugged, dense look, typically 1.5 to 3 inches long. They're distinctly paired, unlike some other pines, and contribute to the tree's characteristic picturesque, wind-sculpted coastal appearance.

Shore Pine

Cones

Shore pine cones (from Pinus contorta) are small (1-3 inches), hard, egg-shaped, and woody, with a distinctive sharp prickle on each scale, often pointing backward towards the branch, and can stay closed for years, requiring fire to release their seeds.

Shore Pine

Bark

The bark of a Shore Pine (Pinus contorta var. contorta) is typically dark brown to grayish-black, appearing thin, flaky, scaly, and often furrowed into irregular plates, sometimes with a reddish tint, especially on younger trees, reflecting its tough, coastal habitat with salty air.
