Sunny ponds in the Pacific Northwest forests occur when year round standing water kills trees and shrubbery enough that the sun hits and warms the water for a significant amount of time.  Amphibian species like our local Chorus Frog will travel great distances to return to these ponds for the warmth and increased biological activity for their tadpoles.  These frogs will create an enomous amount of noise in the Spring Time.
