Paperbark Birch

betula papyrifera

A paperbark birch (Betula papyrifera), also called white or canoe birch, is a North American deciduous tree famous for its brilliant white bark that peels in paper-like layers, revealing a reddish inner bark, and its leaves turn golden in the fall. Valued by Indigenous peoples for making waterproof canoes and baskets, its wood is used for various products, and the tree thrives in cool, northern climates, often being one of the first to regrow after fires.
